Default What Would You Shoot at Augusta National?
Thought this might be a good discussion. You have the best caddie at Augusta by your side on a perfectly manicured golf course from the tees the pros play from, what do you think you would shoot? I really believe I could shoot around 80-85 on a great day.

At a 12 index with the best assistance in the world on your bag, playing the same course the pros play, I would be willing to make a nice wager that you would not sniff 80. Clearly this is not a knock on you, and said mostly in jest. I have had the pleasure of playing some of the nicest courses in the world from where the pros play, and I can assure you its a different game.

110+. I am being quite honest here. Greens with speed that will pucker you up. Tight driving holes. Yikes.

If you shot 80-85, Billy Payne should step down and make your chairman and your first order of business should be to rename Amen Corner, Coondog Corner.

I would be ecstatic to break 90. Probably more like 94-96 though playing the conditions they do. Those greens would eat me alive.

ETA: this is assuming playing the best that I possibly can. If I was having a ho-hum average day, no way in heck I would break 100.

I played Cog Hill a week after the 2005 Western Open. The rough was still 6" deep and was just waiting to jump up and take a bite out of your arse. Manicured fairways, good lies, and good conditions aside. You better be in the fairway every time, and be able to put your approaches within 3 feet, or you aren't shooting 80-85. I shot 101 at Cog Hill, and was chopping it out of the rough most of the day.

The key to your hypothetical situation is the tees. From where the PRO'S play? As an 18 handicapper I'd probably shoot at least 130+. Now if it was from the member's tees, I might break 100 if I'm on my game.

No offense to you whatsoever, but at a 12 projecting an 80-85, I don't think you understand the differences between the courses we play and the ones the pros play (especially somewhere like Augusta). 80-85 is your average on your everyday course.

Now, not all tour stops are night-and-day to our courses, I've posted red numbers at two (Firestone and TPC @ Heron Bay) from the tips, but places like Augusta are on a different level...especially when you factor the green speeds in. Those red numbers weren't posted set to PGA tour conditions, either, or I probably would've been closer to even or over. Almost definitely over, actually.

At Augusta, their tees, their conditions - I would be pleased to shoot 78.

This isn't the point of posting this topic, I want people to write what they think they would shoot if they ever got the opportunity to play these grounds. I truly believe I am capable of playing well anywhere, and if people aren't then they don't have any hope playing well anywhere at all. If you have length and put the ball in play you can play anywhere, unless you have no touch on the greens.

I would be overcome with joy if I shot under 100.

If you can shoot an 85 at Augusta from the pro tees in the current conditions, then you aren't a 12 handicap.

I would be very happy to keep it in the 90's. Especially the first round at a new course.

So you shoot in the 80's on tracks set up for amateurs and you think you can shoot around that same score @ Augusta set up for the biggest event of the year? (assuming here that you meant play it as it is set up for this week).

I remember reading an article a while back that was along the same lines. They had amateurs go out and play Bethpage Black just as it is set up for the pros and I think it was tough for those guys to break triple digits.

They do that deal every year with the U.S. Open, where scratch golfers and single digit handicaps try to break 100 on the U.S. Open setup. I don't recall anyone shooting under 90, at least that comes to mind quickly. I know Romo is darn near scratch, and he shot a high 80's, if I remember right. Timberlake is a single digit handicap, and I believe he shot almost 100 at Torrey Pines. I know there are some really great golfers on this board, with low handicaps, and I think they would be pretty hard pressed to shoot 80 on the Masters Pro setup.

I think I could post a 70 playing from the same tee's and same conditions as the pro's, on the front 9!

I would hang my clubs on the mantle if I broke 100.

Actually.....I will have an answer for you in the next month. May 17th, a good friend of mine is playing the course not once, not twice, but three times. He is around a 13-15 handicap. Not sure what tees they are going to play but if it's up to him they will play the backs. I will let you know once he completes the weekend.

I dunno. I'll have a better idea after I get back from Firestone South. Probably 100.

I don't believe very many here would break 100, myself included. The greens would really hurt some folks feelings. I have watched Nicklaus school many newbies in practice rounds on the quirks of each green. I can imagine several of us putting off of greens more than once and having to wedge it back to the green. Here is some interesting reading about the high scores shot during the actual tournament. http://old.post-gazette.com/pg/05099/485625-136.stm

I'm there with you JB. I have played a few fantastic courses from just in front of the pro tees and it really is a game to which I am not accustomed.
At Augusta, I would be very happy with a 90.
