I play in charity scrambles from time to time. Can't say I love them, mostly because they usually take all day but also because they don't feel like real golf, but I had never anchored a team before.
My team included my 7 year old son (27 handicap), my friend's 13 year old (21 handicap) and my friend (who is at least a 20 handicap). None of them wanted to bat last so I got the honor. Normally in a scramble you are able to just blast away but anchoring a team of bogey golfers and kids meant that I was often our last chance to hit a fairway, green or drain a putt. I kept thinking, "this must be what match play feels like," as there was always so much riding on my shots. We ended up at -5 which was no where near the top (-13), but given the skill level of the team I think it was pretty good and best of all, it felt like a real game for once. It was also a real boost to my confidence to perform well when the pressure was on. |

That's an awesome score man considering the circumstances. Hope you had fun with it. I love being the anchor in scrambles. If one person his a safe shot it frees me up to go at it with no worries and if not I love the pressure. Either way it makes me focus more and I usually play better.

That sounds awesome!!!! I only wish my son and his three friends would love the game that much and want to participate in a scramble with me....He's currently 7 and addicted to baseball so we have some work to do there but that sounds awesome.
Great score given the foursome as well! Hope you had a great day with your son! |

I meant to update this last week. I was invited to play in the Orlando Airport Scramble at Shingle Creek last week Tuesday. The team was myself, my BFF Butch (lol), his boss and one of their sub contractors. (my buddy heads the security for employees at the airport)
Anyway we shot -17 as a group and when I say we made a miles worth of putts, we did. Dave the sub contractor made 5 in a row at one point and he was our 2nd guy. We made 4 putts outside of 30'. We had two tap in eagles and an attempt at a par 4 eagle from 60', tap in birdie. I anchored the crew but didn't need to because this was a true group effort. Kongfrontation |

We won going away by 5 shots. We used two mulligans that paid off. I also win two round trip tickets on Alaska air for winning the putting contest, $100 each winning the scramble and luggage in the raffle. My partners each won two round trip tickets as well in the raffle and luggage. Our table cleaned up to say the least. |

I kept thinking, "this must be what match play feels like," as there was always so much riding on my shots. I played in a scramble Friday with a 3-man team (even though tourn. was 4-person scramble) and I don't know if I'd call myself the "anchor" but the added pressure actually made me more aware of my alignment on every shot. We didn't come close to winning either but I learned from the situation and had a great time.
