Default Dicks Sporting Goods
Ok. So a new Dicks Sporting Goods store just opened up in town. My two sons went there during their grand opening for a visit. They gave me a good report considering they are 15 and 13 yrs old. So, I decided to drop by for a looksee. The only department I visited was the golf dept. Large. Alot better than the Academy's and so on. BUT, they have very few 2011 iron sets. It seems all of the irons are either 2010 models or 2011 shovels. No Titelist clubs at all. Only a few different Taylormades, Burner 1.0, 2.0, and just Burners. Adams A4's I believe but no CB1's or CB2's. Callaways were the most abundant with Diablo's and Razr X among others. Plenty, and I mean plenty, of shoes to choose from. Their putter selection was nice. They have a hitting room but the machine was down, already, that tells you what the ball trajectory was etc.

Overall, not too impressed. I guess it's like I tell my wife, if you want groceries, go to a grocery store, not Wal-Mart.

Dick's owns Golf Galaxy. Most Dick's don't carry Titleist or Ping in my area, but The Golf Galaxys seem to have all the brands.

Thats interesting. I never knew that. I have an Edwin Watts in town but just wanted to compare. Pricing wasnt better at Dick's either. Nearest Golfsmith is a 3.5 hour drive but it also has a Golftec inside of it. I'm going there Monday for a fitting!

As said already. Dick's doesn't carry Titleist. They do not stock blade irons. And very few player's irons in general. Dick's is not a store that is going to cater to the very good golfers, as they are the minority.

The pricing should be the same across the board. Anybody selling an R11 for $275, should raise a warning flag.

Dick's also does not stock Ping other than putters. Your best bet is to try and find a Golfsmith or Golf Galaxy to see all the possible choices.

Dick's Sporting Goods owns Golf Galaxy. Dick's will cater to the average golfer when it comes to irons. They do not stock players irons, but can special order players irons. Dick's leaves the player's irons to Golf Galaxy. They're the "golf store" while Dick's is the general sporting goods store.

So, Taylormade TP Cb's are blade irons? Or MC's? Adama's CB's arent blades either. I got the impression that they are alot like Best Buy's tv's. Last years models at decent pricing.

I wasnt referring to a 50% price difference. But I would have assumed that a putter priced elsewhere for $199.00 would be around $179.00 there considering how big they are. I sure had my eye on that Odysee Bachstryke Dart putter for a few minutes.

Yeah, that sounds pretty risky. That had epic fail all over it. Been there. Wife had to have Chinese and I wanted a steak. So I ordered steak at the Chinese place. Epic fail!

I am always a fan of the local specialty shop. Be it golf, bikes, skis, etc... My local store is family owned for a long time now and they are all on the mens club at the local muni. I'll buy from them no problem.

The Dick's in my town has the full PING lineup and a fitting cart.

Yeah, I wish we had something like that. Seems the big box stores have run all of the family owned stuff out of town over a decade ago. We use to have a great family owned pharmacy until Wal-Mart moved in. I wouldnt mind paying higher prices for something like that.

For the newest equipment, the OEMs give almost no leeway on pricing to any seller, and if the store tries to put the pricing below competitors, it is not unheard of for the OEM to pull their products out of the store (PGA Superstore and Footjoy/Acushnet last year).

Dick's isn't meant to be a full service golf store like Edwin Watts is, but you can get some good clothing and shoe deals there periodically. There really is a lack of good golf stores down there in Mobile for some reason (particularly since there are so many courses).

Only golf related items I'd look to buy would be clothes that are on sale. Can always seem to find a clearance rack and then every now and then the occasional 25%-50% off the clearance price, so end up with some pretty good deals on that. Their golf club stock has always underwhelmed me and thus, I never spend any time walking through the club area. Would rather go to Golfsmith or Roger Dunn to demo clubs.

You may also look at the pro shops of golf courses in your area. Some courses actually have full iron sets to demo. Also, most courses will match any advertised price on equipment.
