Default sanding the greens
My home course and I'm sure many others sand the greens a couple time a year.
What is the purpose of this? My buddy says it's more likely for proper drainage which sounds logical. Is there any other reason why they throw sand on the greens?

I used to dread the sanding of the greens at my home course. This year I just took it as an opportunity to focus on GIR, and putting be damned. Funny thing is that this November I shot my most consistently low scores of the year using that mentality on those sandy greens.

The only thing I hated or questioned this year was that one of the courses I play, did core aeration and sanded late in the season at a point when the greens did not have time to heal quickly because the temps were low. Most years they do it earlier and the greens heal up quickly and get back to normal. This year they were rough and the core holes were there for weeks before it got cold enough to close the course.
With that said, I just remind myself and others that this work is necessary and for the good of the greens. When it does take place we tend to just worry about GIR as well and not so much about putting. In a few days or a week everything is usually back to normal during the regular season.

A few of the courses I play around here on, usually the better ones will arreate and sand greens in the fall but only do the back nine one week then a week or so later do the front. Makes it a decent round for half of it with preditable putts.

A lot of the courses will do this at least once a year. When that happens, green fees are cheaper

At Fullerton GC, they do half of the greens at a time. Its tough to putt when the greens are sanded, the golf ball bounces all over the place
