My Sense of Order
I don't mind starting on the 10th hole if I'm only playing the back 9 that day. If I'm playing 18, I want to start on the 1st hole. Otherwise, it throws me off. I hate shotguns for this reason. Well that and I always mess up the scorecard when I start on a hole other than 1. Anyone else feel the same way? Or am I the only one with such a strong sense of order?

Agreed. The worst is starting a shotgun on hole 2, 3, or 4. You think you're done at 18. Mentally, you start letting your hair down. And then you have more holes to go.

I once felt the same way you do about starting on 10, but got over it because of the way they assign tee times at the munis in Tucson. They often have what they call the "wave" where they put groups off on 1 and 10 simultaneously for the first two hours in the morning, the have no tee times while these groups make the turn.
Shotgun starts still have the same effect as always. I don't like them. |
C-Tech - They do the same here, but if you start on 10 during that time - you can only play 9 holes.

I don't have a problem starting on 10 since most scorecards are divided up into 9's and you start out from the clubhouse and end back at the clubhouse (at least most of the time).
I haven't done a shotgun start yet, so I don't know for sure, but I'm thinking it would throw me off. |
I don't care what hole I start on as long as there are seventeen more after it.

We play in a dogfight every thursday and saturday, both days we have 30 - 60 golfers shot gun starting on different holes. I hate having to start on par 3's and par 5's. Other than that I'm fine starting and finishing on any hole, meaning any par 4. ;)

I don't mind shotguns. I used too, but I guess I have gotten used to it. I do notice though that when I play the 1st hole at my club as like my 13th hole I play it WAY better than when I play it as the 1st hole. It is a really easy hole, but when it is your first hole it just seems a bit tougher. I'd say my average when playing it as the first hole is 4.2 but when playing it later in the round it is like 3.8. Totally different.

I have a similar experience as mchepp. The first hole is always a little easier when it isn't the first hole. There is a fairly busy road along #1 and when I tee off there I have to aim left b/c I tend to shank one in the road due to nerves or just because I sorta suck.

I am with JP, I just want to play 18 holes. I have played shotgun starts for 20 years, they don't bother me. When I play them, there might be certain holes I don't want to start on, but I really don't care.
There is a private course in the area that will switch the 9's every once in a while to give a different look at the course. I think it is for 2-3 week every couple of months all play will start on 10 instead of 1. I think that is a neat idea. There are regular courses I play that it seems like you can't ever get anything going on the first few holes. To play 1-4 as 10-13 would be a nice change of pace. |
For me it's never really mattered. As long as I'm playing 9/18 total it doesn't throw me off to start in an odd location at all.

I don't like to start on any hole except number one. I'll do it, but I don't like it. I find it goes against the natural order of things.

This why I use my own score card. They can start me any where they want, makes no difference to me. At the end of 18 holes the number is what it is. I know what par 3s, 4s, and 5, look like.
