Default The Truly Amazing Yemeni Exodus of 1949
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1159880.html From information article: From three Jewish diasporas in the Muslim world - Libya, Yemen and Iraq - there clearly was a quick and complete, or almost complete, exodus to Israel throughout a short time in the first years of their state, between 1952 and 1949. The nearest to the "flight from Egypt" design was the immigration from Yemen, which started in July 1949. The Jews were involved nearly all by it residing in that region during the time, some 45,000 out of 50,000 spirits. The country was left by them quickly, many of them within an amount of several weeks, once the sign was handed. First they continued foot overland to the Red Sea port of Aden, and from there they were flown to Israel within an aerial convoy which was offered two names: "Magic Carpet" and "On Eagles' Wings." The bout of the agonies in the conditions, the wilderness and starvation that affected the immigrants on their way has been confused within their collective memory of the airlift, however it was recounted by the Zionist emissary Haim Yosef Zadok. In his memoir, "In the Storms of Yemen" (1957, in Hebrew), Zadok explained the arrival in Aden of the principle rabbi of Sanaa, Amram Korah: "We discovered him sitting on a, leaning on a support, shutting his eyes every moment and saying: 'A genuine exodus from Egypt'! ... His main desire was to 'sacrifice the people of our folks from the dangers of the wilderness, and meanwhile provide them with quick aid before they die of hunger and are eaten by diseases.'" The immediate supply of the putting up with was the Joint Distribution Committee's poor contract with the British authorities in Aden, which was a crown colony at that time, along with its immediate environs. A large transit camp had been operated by the Joint there in the past, and the British permitted residents to be sent by it to the small state of Israel at the beginning of 1949, on condition the service then be dismantled. In its place, the business was handed another camp, with room for a maximum of 500 people. That covered there could be no more opportunities to offer protection to many Yemenite Jews seeking to immigrate to Israel.
