Default If You Were Me...
I'm stalled (boo hoo)... So, I was planning on doing an apple day today, but then I remembered something. The purpose of the apple day is for a diuretic... I have prescription diuretics because I tend to retain water a lot. Would you do the apple day or the pill or both?

Personally? I would do neither and wait it out. Unless the stall is really long like 5-7 days.

The stall WILL break by itself. Water weight isn't what I wanted to lose so I didn't worry about it too much. I had an 8 day stall when my body didn't want to go past the 200 mark but it does eventually break. But others have done apple days so if you don't want to wait it out, you could do one.

apple day is more mental than anything so, if you believe 'mind over matter', then do one.

fran- i don't hesitate to take the pills. i don't do the apple days because i don't want to give up the protein for that day. but your body is less able to lose weight when you're retaining water, so i don't like to wait to dump the water on my own.

Apple days do often work to help break a stall.
Dr. S. says an apple day will cause you to lose water weight that will not be regained after the apple day. It can be a real phsychological boost of encouragement as well, as we see our weight continue to drop after a 5 or more day stall, thus the phsychological part.
Dr. S typically did not like his patients taking water pills so I would advise against it. You will drink as little as possible while on apple day.
Many say it is just phsychological and in one aspect that may be true. You will probably eventually get through your stall without one. But man it can be very discouraging day after day of strictly adhering to the diet and not dropping any lbs.
When an apple day can kind of kick start you through the stall sometimes, and help give you the motivation and encouragement to stick to the regimen. Some people find it difficult to only eat 6 apples with no other food, but it is only for 24 hours and I didn't have a problem with doing it. Whenever I got hungry I would eat one of my big apples.

And I know he says it won't be regained but several on this forum have said they DID regain it. Another thing to try is to drink water like a madwoman!

VERY true - drinking water can break a stall - others have reported that on here.

Margie, isn't that only if a person can not do an apple day?
Can't remember.

here's what he says:

The other way to break up a plateau is by giving a non-mercurial diuretic for one day. This is simpler for the patient but we prefer the apple-day as we sometimes find that though the diuretic is very effective on the following day it may take two to three days before the normal daily reduction is resumed, throwing the patient into a new fit of despair. It is useless to give either an apple-day or a diuretic unless the weight has been stationary for at least four days without any dietary error having been committed.

i don't know why it would take 2-3 days before more weight loss occurs. i didn't find that to be so, any more than with the apple day. i would think that the only way it would, would be if you dumped too much water with the pill- and then you didn't lose as you were becoming hydrated again. but i found that also to be true with the apple day.

the main reason why i don't like the apple day is that i've lost a significant amount of muscle- and i don't like the idea of eliminating the little bit of protein that i get while on the hcg.

Well, I took the pill and woke up this morning exactly 2 pounds less. I was really, really starting to get discouraged, so even if it is "mental" I needed it! I'm smiling once again... :+)

I heard once that while you are losing pounds you are not losing inches and while you are losing inches you are not losing pounds. So I figured that when I am not losing weight my body is losing inces and that makes me feel better. Anyone else heard this.

yes, that's true. the fat within the fat cell breaks down before the cell wall does. so you body temporarily fills up that cell with water, until the cell wall has finished breaking down. water is heavy- and that is why you can stall. so you can still be losing inches, while your weight is higher.

and for women, there are a hundred reasons why we will retain water at times- so the scale will not look as consistent as it does with guys (darn men...)

wow... awesome. I just send that to my mom and grandma too. I was feeling kinda bummed cause I lost so many days in a row, then stalled two days, then lost a lbs, then stalled two days and then lost 1.8lbs this am. Inches are going when pounds are not... I'm doing to post that above the mirror in my bathroom so I don't get upset when the scale remains the same.

Today was day 5 of a stall so I decided to do the apple day. It was getting frustrating knowing I was following the protocol exactly and not dropping for 5 days. I'm on day 12 VLCD. Dropped 11.6 pounds total in the first 7 days. Then nothing. I am hovering at 197.

I'm anxious to see what tomorrow's scale reading will be. I did do smooth move tea this morning because of constipation for a few days.
