Default Musings on weight fluctuation
Posting this for information and comments...
I weigh myself when I get home from work - not obsessed so much as fascinated - yesterday I was a whole pound heavier than the day before. Not worried, but interested...so I weighed myself first thing this morning as well. One and three-quarters of a pound lighter than yesterday afternoon, and have added quarter of a chicken and half a cabbage to my bodyweight since then. So where does it go?

Then on the way to work I was thinking, people who weigh themselves the recommended once a week might see they have lost nothing by the scales, but if one week they weigh themselves at their 'low weight' point of the day and the next week at their 'high point' weight of the day, they might actually have lost 2 - 3 pounds although it doesn't show. Does this logic follow?

Just goes to show that over small increments, your actual weight doesn't matter

Your true weight is what you weigh first thing in the morning, after going to the bathroom, and stepping on the scales naked!
That is your true weight because it is not being influenced by any undigested food as whatever you ate the previous night would have been digested by then, and any waste disposed off after your bathroom visit. Also, you will most likely be dehydrated as water is the biggest culprit in causing weight fluctuations.

Weighing yourself in the evening one day, and first thing in the morning the next, and counting that as a "loss" is not actually correct because of the impact food, fluids, and hormonal changes will have had on your body during the day. To track your weight loss accurately, you should weigh at the same time of day each time (whether it's weekly or daily), on the same set of scales, and preferably on the same surface. You have to compare like with like otherwise all you are seeing are the results of either water retention or water loss.

Do you get that much dehydrated overnight? That's a lot of water to use up. Especially as this morning I weighed before my 'bathroom visit'. How much of yesterday evenings meal did I burn overnight? How much fat does the average person burn sleeping? And why was I heavier Thursday than Wednesday even though I weighed at the same time? Does anyone know? How do hormones affect your weight over a short time? yes, I am always heavier just before my period but that's for 3 whole days.
I stress again, I'm doing my weighing this often because I'm fascinated by the way it fluctuates, not because I'm obsessed with my weight loss. over the course of a week it comes down anyway so daily fluctuations are not relevant, just fascinating.

I've researched this a bit and apparently you really do lose between one and two pounds water by weight every night just by breathing. Wow. No wonder I need a gallon mug of tea as soon as I wake up.
