I think the reason she came home why she did today was because 1) they don't give a shit because it's just a HS and 2) the doctor normally leaves at 4:30 and it was 7 when I picked her up so he just wanted to go home

Glad she is safe and warm now! I will keep everyone updated

Yeah it really depends on the Humane Society.. the one that is 10min. away from me (where I took Piper and 3 of my foster pups) is awesome! The one I took Wilson to is still good, I just wasn't happy that they sent him home super drowsy.

Dentals usually run around $200, maybe more, depending on if there are any extractions needed, etc. I know Feb. is "dental" month, so most vets are giving a % off if you have one done this month.

I adopted her from there a month ago, its included in their adoption fee so I figured why not. I don't even know if dental cleaning is worth it, I may try some safe products that I find on google and see where I get there . I am gonna call my vet for a price on Monday and see what happens from there .

Oh my god.. That doesn't sound humane at all, and I empathize with long hours, but that is an understanding that comes along with being ANY kind of dr. I'm sorry you had this experience, I can't imagine. I'd probably be terrified if it were me. Hell, I panic if my pups are in the back yard and don't respond to my recall right away. Lol Poor girl, I hope she heals swiftly. Is it ten days for spayings? Sorry if that's an ignorant question, I've only had males. :/

April- If she can't see, I would contact your vet immediately. I've never spayed a female but that doesn't sound normal at all and I would be worried to say the least.
Not normal in the least. I'm sure many here have had MUCH more extensive surgeries on their dogs and I don't think I've ever heard of being blinded as being any kind of reaction -- temporary or otherwise.

Something is VERY wrong if this dog is blind as a result of surgery.

WHY would you take a dog to a humane society to get anything that requires anesthesia done?

It's ALL about numbers at those places and getting things done as quickly as possible.*

Been there, seen it...yes, I'm sure some are better than others but NO WAY after what I saw.
I wouldn't discount all HS or low cost clinics. I've taken all of my dogs to low cost clinics for their S/N surgeries and none have had any issues and were very well taken care of (minus Wilson being too drowsy for my liking when I brought him home; he was perfectly fine the next day). We have two local SPCA's who have clinics at their shelter and they perform surgeries all the time at a fraction of the cost for pet owners.. without them, many animals would never get the surgeries they need.

However, I have never heard of a dogs vision going out after a surgery.. that is NOT normal and I would have her at the vet in the AM if that continues.

Wow, I do low cost neuter/spay places all the time, and I've never had a bad experience. I'm sorry that you had to go through this. I hope Millie heals nicely and can rest easy now, bless her heart .

Yeah, what's up with her vision, that shouldn't have anything to do with her spay surgery??

That incision looks painful. And why did they shave such a large area?? My girl's incision looked very tidy, clean and was stitched from underneath with so no stitches showed. So sorry to hear of this horrible experience.

Holy cow, that incision looks huge! I work at a HS and our vet is awesome as she does so many spay/neuter surgeries. Her incisions are small and very tidy. Sorry you had to go through this!

Both Desmond and Benelli were "fixed" at their shelters. They were from different places tho. Desmond was kept there until he was fully healed and Benelli was released to us the next day. They were taken care of, no issues. I'd imagine every now and then they have a "special case" where it doesn't go 100% smoothly..
Hope I can share this here, but this is Benelli the day he came home:

No, neither would I.It's just a matter of general policy for me and the recommendations I would make to others. In general, I want to work with a known, trusted vet with known, trusted procedures and will recommend to others they do the same if they have a choice.Carla

Like I said, I am so sorry! I am happy she is okay and pray she will continue to get better. I would beware of things that state they are good for your dogs teeth, please do a lot of research before you believe some ad that states it will help your dogs teeth! Just my opinion!

I'm glad, she's feeling better, OP!
My dog didn't get any pain meds when she was spayed at the HS years ago.... (?) I'm mad about that now!

Sorry for your experience! Is this a dog you had an took to the HS for a spay? Or a dog you were getting from the HS? I would never take my dog for any free or reduced price kind of surgery! Especially those that promote a cheaper or free price for PBs. Their only intention, imo, is to get rid or reduce PB's.... !
Lordy, whaat bullshit.

To say "their ONLY INTENTION IS TO GET RID OF BULLY BREEDS" just sounds, IMO, dumb as hell. and, OF COURSE WE WANT TO FREAKIN REDUCE.. duhhh?? Im sure their purpose for offering such , is not to help ppl who can not afford to get their dog s/n.. but only to rid the breed... lmfao!! What a joke!

I have helped start a program at my local vets (One of my fav. Bully rescues inspired me) for FREE/ VERY LOW COST s/n for Bully breeds. Our vets take EQUAL care for the Free/Low cost S/N, just as they do the ones who pay full price. Our goal is to help encourage everyday pet owners of this breed to s/n. so their dogs do not contribute to the over population of mixed breeds, 'oops' litters exc. and also help the ppl who want to s/n but simply can not afford the steep price tag.

just like you check your vets to make sure they are a good vet... maybe others who have used that vet... YOU DO THE SAME FOR ANY PLACE THAT YOU WERE TO GET YOUR DOG S/N at.

To the OP... Hope your girl is feeling a little better soon... ;/ Sucks a fat one that you/your pup had to go thru such a mess for a s/n. I would recommend that you POLITELY, either write, go in person (or both) and express your concerns about the spay. Tell them that while you are very grateful that they are tryin to help your town out by offering free s/n... That they should still care for the dog as if they were their own dog. Not to rush, and take their time. If you do ONLY write a letter, make sure you ask for a reply.
While some might blow something of the sort off, IT DEF CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Feedback can REALLY change the way some ppl think. Even if it makes them a little more careful and thoughtful during the s/n then.. your word has helped someone/something along the line.

Im sure she will heal up and be good as new soon!!

Jeez, how scary! It sounds like maybe they shouldn't have sent her home when they did. Piper was completely "with it", albeit a bit drowsy, when I picked her up from her spay. No blood at all.

Hope she's on the mend now!

She almost looked like a drunk dog when I walked in, all loopy and stuff, they said her vision was probably blurred because of the medication, but still, when you put your hands up, she cannot see, she is only going off of sound.

If they have to look for a slipped ligation.. yes, the incision will be bigger than a regular spay. Remember, folks: this was the SECOND surgery to repair a failed ligation of the stump. Looking for that bleeder is not possible with a 1/4 inch incision.
Saying that they don't give a crap... nice. I could retort and say that most people who price shop and then bitch about the service provided don't give a crap about their pet. SO tired of owners.. seriously.
