Wrinkles
 

I am trying to adopt a gorgeous pit from shelter...but someone at the shelter said she is Shar pei mixed b/c of her wrinkles on her head. her picture is attached. Can someone tell me if she is...my wife is allergic to shar pei's and I am worried her coat will change when she becomes bigger if she is mixed. Does pits have a wrinkles similar to hers when they are puppies?.. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've never heard of someone being allergic to a specific breed over another.. But to answer your question, no, the pup just looks like she has a wrinkly forehead. Although, without a proper pedigree, there's no way to know for sure what breed she is or isn't.

That's a very cute pup. The wrinkles are very cute, but I'm pretty sure no one can determine a dogs breed based off of forehead wrinkles. I also am not understanding how your wife is allergic only to one breed.

I am not really sure why she is.. we tried to adopt a rottie/shar pei mix..he broke out pretty bad.. Our vet said shar pei secret a certain serum in they hair that are allergic to some people and their coat becomes very prickly. So we have been trying to play with this puppy to see if she breaks out but so far the concern of few ppl saying she is a mix kinda scares me to think she may have some allergic reactions going forward. But thanks for your replies..I think I will try to get my wife to spend more time with her to see if she has any further problems. Hopefully she wont and we can adopt this pup.

I know what you're saying about the prickly fur, but I think that's just the normal dander and saliva glands that are causing a reaction. I was/still sometimes am allergic to both but I deal with it because I could never imagine my life without dogs.

When I was young, my allergies were really bad so we kept the dogs outside. Maybe you could do something like that so that you don't end up in a house that's covered in fur.

I don't see Shar-Pei at all, but I sure do hear it tossed around a good bit when shelters talk about what a bulldog might be mixed with. MAYBE if that pup had a tail curled up over it's back, I MIGHT consider Shar-Pei. But that pups tail, from what I can see is straight. The "wrinkles" in and of themselves don't raise any flags with me.

I think if your wife can handle it ... you might have a good idea about her spending some time with the pup to see if she feels a reaction coming on.

LOL! I don't see any Shar-Pei there. I don't think I've ever seen a Pit Bull puppy that DIDN'T have the forehead wrinkles as a pup (which somewhat lessen when an adult, to be mostly shown when the dog is on alert!). It adds to the cuteness factor for sure!

Kahne had a ton of wrinkles when he was a puppy. I also fixated on the "allergic to Shar peis" thinking that being allergic to one breed didn't make sense. So I googled and what I found out (if anyone cares http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png) is that Shar peis are classified as a "high dander" dog breed and one of the breeds of dogs that people with allergies are recommended to avoid. Basset Hounds are also listed as a high dander breed and my mother used to swear she eventually could not be in the same room with my Basset without practically having an asthma attack; but she has absolutely no allergic reaction whatsoever to our pit bull. And that dog gets on her bed and couch.

High dander dog breeds - Avoid
It has been found that the epidermal turnover is more rapid in breeds that are prone to the various forms of dry and oily seborrhea (term for any skin disease involving dry or greasy scaling), such as Cocker Spaniels, Springer Spaniels, West Highland White Terriers, Chinese Shar-Pei, Basset Hounds, German Shepherd Dogs, Irish Setters, Afghan Hounds, Doberman Pinschers and Dachshunds. Instead of the normal 21 day cycle, the epidermal turnover of seborrheic dogs is 3 to 4 days and so they produce exceptionally large quantities of dander. (Allerpet Inc. 1997)
These dog breeds are known to be prone to skin problems and therefore likely to shed more dander (shed more skin): Afghan Hound, Basset Hound, Cocker Spaniel, Dachshund, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd, Irish Setter, Shar-Pei, and West Highland White Terrier (Asthma Magazine 2005).

i have a sharp pei/ pit bull mix and hell have his wrinkles for life very excited about that haha

I have a terrier mix and as a puppy she had so many cute little wrinkles on her head/face. But as she got older they went away. however with certain expressions you can still see it.

Most all pups have wrinkles. Your pup, or potential pup, is adorable. Impossible to know exactly what breed it is, but I really don't see a lot of Sha-Pei in her. They could be saying it's a Shar-Pei mix to get her adopted.

Have your wife spend some time with her and see if she has an allergic reaction. And too, if she has a chance to build up immunity to whatever is in her dander, she may not have any problems with her.

I know what you mean about the prickly coat. My parents have a shar-pei and he doesnt make my eyes water or make me sneeze or anything like normal allergies, but when i pet him and his fur touches my arms i break out with bumps that itch like hell. It usually just takes washing my hands and forearms with soap and water and im fine though. As far as if that dog has shar-pei in her, there is no way to tell. Good luck to you.
