Default Summer heat-Should I clip?
Its been hotter than the hinges of hades lately-and very humid. While Bella seems to be doing ok with the heat,Beep isn't doing too bad-she's just blowing TONS of coat,Mischa my coated gsd isn't fairing so well.I do not want her to overheat, but shaving the whole dog trashes the coat and some amount of coat is insulative.
I am thinking about shaving only her belly,so she can cool down.Do you think it would help her,to clip her belly?

I wouldn't because as someone put it to me before,"I've never seen a naked man cross the desert". The dog is going to be hot but it's summer so it is to be expected. I find that there are more problems from clipping than benefits.

I usually clip Liberty's belly (not yet this year). Her hair is ridiculously long under there. I do a spay clip, just the abdomen. It keeps it from getting matted, and I think she likes that she can put her bare belly on the cold kitchen floor.
I wouldn't shave anything else though. Right now, it's 90 degrees and 64% humidity. On days like today, Liberty goes out to pee then comes right inside. She isn't shedding abnormally, even when she spends hours out on my mom's front steps when we're over there.
As long as you watch them and make sure they're ok, dogs are pretty good at letting you know when they're too hot and need some AC and water.

That's what I planned on doing was a 'spay clip' for the same reason you shave liberty. I know it can mess with the texture of the dogs coat to shave her down, and she has good body insulation from all the coat.Mischa has so much hair its not funny and she's NOT shedding out very much.(thank god!)Her fur is like the legnth of a rough collie, and the undercoat density reminds me of a northern breed (like a malamute)more than a gsd.

Clipping the belly and underarm area is ok. But just as that coat insulates in the winter, it is very protective in the summer and your dog is actually more at risk to overheat with the coat shaved that with it intact/natural.
