Default Growly face
Anyones dog make a curled up "growly" face when he greets you?
Bronco does this and it has always cracked us up, its pretty much a typical apbt greeting with the whole dog wagging and excited...except he makes the face while hes doing it. Im surprised I havnt thought to post this q yet.

I use to have an Australian Shepard that did this. I decided it was her smile... My pit does it now when I tickle him...

2 of my friends' pits "smile".

Scared the crap out of me the first time I went to their house (they now have 4 adult pit bulls, a pit bull puppy+2 of it's litter mates they are fostering, and an adult pit bull lab mix), because I'd never seen a dog smile before. Not to mention their dogs are quite intimidating (I love pit bulls, but I still get a little freaked out from time to time, especially if I'm in danger of being knocked down and smothered with kisses).

My mom's poodle does that. I don't like her so I think it is just annoying, But slowanlow, now that's a grin if I ever saw one.

MJ doesn't smile, but if she's REALLY excited to see me, she will let out a really deep, soft growl. It's at a very specific tone that I've never heard her make except at these times. She didn't start it until about 6 months ago, and it honestly made me wonder what was wrong with her the first time she did it. Now I know it's just her happy growl for me.

My dog doesn't do it, but I've seen a couple that do & it's really cute!

The 1st time I saw a dog smile, was years ago at work I was walking through the kennels just to see how the dogs were doing. And I saw a Dalmatian who was new- she jumped up on the door of her run and showed me her teeth! No growl of course, but I had never seen a dog do this before, and she didn't have a "warning" on her tag. I went & asked someone if she was mean & they said "No, she is so sweet and she smiles at you."
I had 2 go back and see her big ol smile again, I loved it!

My Doberman (R.I.P.) used to. It was a half-arsed attempt at a smile, I suppose

Bella "talks" to me every day when I get home... kinda a growl, howl, bellow, yawn... combination. She's very vocal.. Mollie has never wasted energy on vocalizing, but it's a trip to hear Bella talk to me when I come home everyday.

Yep, Jake has the biggest grin. We call it his Sh-t Eatin Grin. Goes along with talking all the street smack!

Gracie smiles, her previous owners used to encourage it like it was her signature trick or something. I don't ask her to do it though... if it wasn't for the full-body wiggle that goes with it she'd look down-right scary.

I had a heavy Boudreaux dog who would smile & my Doberman does as well. Eli dogs are notorious for "smiling," some even call it the Eli grin or Eli smile.

Slowandlow's pup is definitely smiling (& it's actually one of the better dog smiles I've seen), but I have always heard that type of smile called a "submissive grin."

I never thought about it being a submissive trait. Interesting.

I had a foster that ''smiled'' as we called it. People were always scared of her because of it and it was so stupid because the rest of her body language was obviously rediculously happy. You could get her to do it, too if you talked all stupid to her and mentioned it. lol I actually have met two other pit bulls that did this as well.

Bailey used to sneeze when she did it!

Deeohgee does something similar. If she's trying to get your attention, she does this weird throaty ''growl'' but you look at her and she's all happy and wiggley, like ''Hey! You looked! Now you have to love me!" lol. If you didn't know her though, you'd probably be uneased by it. lol
