Many breeders now ship puppies all over the country and it's quite common for owners to meet their new family members for the first time at the airport.
Have any of you been on the receiving end of picking up a new pup from the airport? I know about the necessary materials to bring such as Photo ID, water (both to possibly wash the pup and/or drinking water), trash bag, etc... What I'm more curious about is the first interaction. Would you coax the pup out of the crate in the airport terminal? Maybe the airport parking lot? Across the street? Put the crate in the car and wait until you get home? I'd appreciate any feedback you have. Thank you. |

It kind of depends....if I see it's a rowdy, friendly scratching at the door kind of pup, I'll let it out right there, if the area is fairly clear. Most of the time, any cargo people around will be delighted to meet the pup too. If the cargo area is not safe, I'll open the door and take the pup out and carry it to a grassy area out front if there is one. If there is a lot of noise, I will get away from the noise before I let the pup out...
If it seems kind of hesitant and hanging at the back of the crate, I'll gently load the crate up and drive to the nearest quiet, grassy area and open the door and let the pup come out.. I'll give the pup some time to potty and drink. If I'm alone, the pup goes back in the crate for the ride home. If someone is with me, they get to hold and entertain the pup on the way home. Carla |

when i picked up my american bulldog she was 9 weeks old..it was a 4 hr flight to Chicago, but total time for in the cage wage closer to 6 1/2 hrs.. as soon as she came thru the door at the freight blding i opened her cage and let her walk around in an sniffed around room appx 30 x 50. she sniffed around stretched her legs and peed..then it was back in the crate for the 1 1/2 hour ride home..but in the crate i threw in a t shirt i had been wearing and i also pushed my fingers in to the crate so she could smell them or rest on them on the way home..
