These dogs range in final size by a bit...as long as he is healthy, he will let you know how big he will get.

Pups go through weird stages as they grow. If you think something is wrong have it checked out. As long as it is healthy that is all that matters the pup will be the size that it grows up to be.

At 4 months of age, my dogs didn't even weigh 20 lbs. Heck, at 5 months of age, very few of them hit that 20 lb mark.

These dogs are not supposed to be large dogs, but rather are medium-sized dogs. 30-55 lbs is average with 55-70 lbs being on the large to very large side.

Looks small compared to what?

That part I don't get.

If you want to estimate what size he'll be, look at the dogs behind him.. NOT just his sire and dam. If you don't know those dogs, it's a crapshoot and you just have to go with it!

I don't see what you're worried about if he's getting blue ribbons.

I don't know about you, but I'm prefer the breed standard to the "monster" standard. My guy is 50 pounds at 7 mos, and I don't expect him to get much heavier really. I think maybe 15 more pounds, tops IF that. As long as he's healthy, it doesn't really bother me though. Just give your pup some time, don't do anything drastic to try to "help" him get to whatever size you want, as you could end up hurting him or even stunting his growth.

In my opinion, when it comes to the pitbull, it depends on the bloodline. I had a Dagger bred dog that was lanky for the first year and as tall as a doberman. I have a Dangerzone male who is about 19" to the withers. I have a Dela Cruz girl who is around 21" to the withers.

Do you have any pics of the dog standing? I also think "the size of the paws" can tell you how tall/size your dog will be, besides just looking at the parents.

IMO, the smaller, the better. I d rather try to scoop up a little dog when out on a walk and someones loose dog comes charging. Peoples idea of how big these dogs should be has gotten all outta wack. I get asked all the time if Riot was the runt, or if hes still a puppy, and hes 2yrs old and 40 lbs.

I thought he was asking about the size of his dog, "he didn't know if it would be tall or short"? ...I was trying to point out something and give him an idea on how he can tell.

---------- Post added at 04:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:04 PM ----------

...did I misread it? Sorry.

Do you do agility with your dogs? Then "too small" shouldn't be a concern, lol. Definitely wouldn't want bulk for an agility dog.

As far as "too small" in general: I don't think there is such a thing as "too small" in our breed. "Too big".. way too common.

It's pretty much impossible to know what size he will turn out to be... You can use his parents as a rough estimate... somewhere between the two of them. But as stated, in order to have a better idea, you'd have to know his grandparents, and theirs, and theirs... This breed should be in the 60ish range. Bella and Mollie are mixed, Mollie is at 75 lbs and Bella at 9ish (estimate) months old, is already at 63 lbs., so both of mine already are over the "estimate". Yes, I would prefer there were more average APBT size, but I wouldn't change them for anything. You will love him no matter what size he turns out to be.
