Well there are several factors to take into consideration...for example, the age of dog.

There are many ways to condition a dog, a lot has to do with the particular dog, and yourself. However, if i could give someone only two bits of advice,, it would be the following. Good diet/feed, and a shit load of walking.

something Peanut enjoys is hours of fetch if it was up to him he would never be done. there are several things you can do but i suggest find something your dog likes and make it fun.
i second what bulldogs said.
you can also use a flirtpole or springpole, hiking, swimming

i dont think a springpole alone maybe a combination of springpole and other things he likes to do. do you like to run? maybe you can jog with him and spring pole or something like that. i would try to find a way to work all his muscles

I spend 45+ minutes a day with a flirt pole(2-3 sessions). Not to mention a good diet and a minimum of 30 minutes of walking(2 trips). My girl is only 7 months old, we keep it light.

What about having your dog pull you on a skate board? I have been pondering the idea, because I have bad knees and even our short walks kill me.

I along with spring pole, flirt pole, fetch, treadmill, and handwalking, dead weight my dogs. I've got two old time window weights that I attach to a harness with a 5ft drag and walk my dogs in the sand, talk about a work out! Im not sure about a skateboard, that could end up on American funniest home videos, but historically, men have worked their dogs while riding a bike.

I don't think I would trust either one of my dogs hooked up to a bike, because the other day there was a guy who was doing that with his dog and as soon as his dog saw mine I thought he was going to be pulled over. If I do decide to do the skateboard thing I will make sure someone is recording it just in case something exciting happens so I can post it.
