I thought I already had a full house (my two plus another friends dog) but when a got a phone call asking if I could watch Klause while they went out of town for a funeral I couldn't say no! Little did I realize what I was getting into.
Klause is a lab/dane mix who lived with an elderly lady for the first 5 years of his life. He met his first dog when they took him to the shelter after his owner died. One of my friends adopted him about 2 months ago, but hasn't been able to socialize him with other dogs. I took him in last night for the weekend while they are gone. At first I just introduced him to Bully - since he is the one dog that can have another dog growl at him and not do anything. Klause shook and growled. So Bully got kenneled and Klause got to explore the house for about an hour. Then Bully got let back out. I gently corrected Klause every time he growled and within 5 mins he laid on the floor ignoring Bully while Bully sat on the couch. This morning I was trying to sneak into my bedroom where Klause was (the rest of the dogs were out) and he plowed passed me knocking me over. I yelled at my husband to grab Charlie and Lucy. I put Charlie up and put Lucy on a leash (break-stick in hand). After about 20 mins they were perfectly fine together and Klause even started playing with Bully. I was SO proud of Lucy since she didn't push to sniff him like she normally does. Then Lucy got kenneled and Charlie was introduced... He's now ok will all of them one or two at a time, but three dogs just freaks him out. I'm excited though because it's only been a total of 14 hours that I've worked with him and he's showing tons of improvement...far different from the growling, shaking dog that walked through my door. |
