How can our facial expressions be tied to anything *but* our emotions?

What else can they be tied to.
Do they necessarily need to be "tied to" anything?

Body language is a similar thing, but if you break it down our limbs' positions are independent of emotion (mostly) but in combination can express particular emotions ... but I think (not sure) that's cultural) and I think (not sure) that what Nut is referring to is more likely genetic (given the similar facial expressions / emotions connections in the great apes.
