I don't particularly know much on this subject but when i visited the DR for the first time and went scuba-diving i asked the same question out of curiosity.

The diving instructor said that he can dive 3/4 times a week and not see a shark for 18 months - and even then we aren't talking about aggressive ones.

Again i am no expert on the subject but that info made me feel better !
