At my home course I will usually bypass the range and the practice green and head strait to the first tee, unless there's a wait. When I am at an away course, I will start out putting some long lag putts in the 30'+ range to get a feel for the speed. I then look for a few lines with some significant slope to try to gauge the breaks. Finally I will move up close,
