The reality is, the Fed never had control. You cannot control something as large as the US economy, made up of hundreds of millions of individual souls. You CAN try, however, and that is what they have done. They started their latest effort 100 years ago, and now all of the manipulations (and the resultant market distortions) have come home to roost. We can see that they are responding by ramping up still further their manipulation attempts, but this time they aren't having the desired effect. We can see how confusing and frightening they find this ineffectiveness. We have offered them the chance to allow the market to take over, enabling real growth, but they have refused, because they derive all of their political power and ill-gotten wealth from those very manipulations (the regulatory state, legislated market share, etc). An entire system has grown up around the corrupt easy-money system, and it can't bring itself to believe the end has come.

What do we have to do to be free once again? Is the next revolution going to "French-style"?
