Elizabeth Dilling's book is pretty good.

I've been through and verified some of the material.

Nasty shit in that Talmud, but in all honesty the Talmud is filled with reams and reams of sophistry, and quibblings over obscure tidbits of religious-legalistic minutiae, compiled and argued by rabbis (attorneys) over hundreds of years.
