Nox, I think you're pretty close to the truth.

What it amounts to is humanity is not perfect. Keep in mind, there were few copies of the Bible that survived unchanged over the 1500 or so years before the printing press. Thats 1500 years where the text could be altered to serve individual purposes we can only fathom at. Not to mention the fact that translations notoriously can alter the implied meanings.

No, the Bible is best left for people to interpret it and discuss it together to deduce what God's meaning is for us all. Its the beauty of believing in the priesthood of all believers, the foundation for the Reformation movement. The broader themes are evident, but the whole point of Biblical scholarship is to recognize that the Bible cannot simply be taken at face value.
