I'm assuming that they wanted to have the music as high fidelity as possible, opting to put their energy into the recording *first*, then put their efforts into making it look good later (a cleaner look without microphones, etc).
I wonder if there are any interwiews with Gjon Mili (the fillmmaker) about this strategy. I'm sure he must of been asked about it a bunch.
From a historical perspective, this was a poor idea. (We have about 300 hours of Gilligan's Island shows but only about 3 minutes of C. Parker.) And from a filmmaker's perspective it looks a bit daffy. But on the other clips you can see musicians yelling at each other, teasing each other, trying to to screw up each other and stuff.
