Hi Terry,
I thought it was a stupid movie for all the reasons you enumerate. I was living in a 350 square foot roach trap in Toronto the first time I saw it, and I thought I could get used to Wesley Snipes crib pretty easy.
The only interview I ever read with Spike on that movie though, he didn't mention anything about an authentic portrayal of jazz life. Just the opposite in fact. He said he was originally thinking about a sporting figure who sustains a career-ending injury, like a pitcher who tears a rotator cuff or something. I can't remember if he said why he decided to make the characters musicians. I do remember thinking at the time that he'd obviously confused jazz with rock and roll.
I was the only white guy in an all-black band at the time though, and I think he got the dressing room banter down pretty good.
