With APBT's (and please correct me anyone, if I'm wrong) There is no real set standard because the were bred for utility not looks. So as long as the dog could do the job, he could look as he was. If he couldn't do the job he didn't get to pass along his genetics. Most AKC breeds have to conform to a set standard(at least in the show ring, so they can win) so people breed for the "look" and less for what the dog can do.
This is why the Border Collie people did not want the breed to go AKC. A working dog has to be able to work, who cares what color it is, or the set of it's ears...
