I have a good friend that has one that he got from a reputable breeder and I can tell you right now that the presa canario is a dog you may want to reconsider as a guard dog. The reason for this is because they are very much similar towards a rottweiler, they are very rank driven and you need to have a lot of experience with dominant dogs. The rottweiler, presa canario, and other rank driven breeds I would avoid, especially for a guard dog since yes they will protect you even without training since it is their nature. However, if the guy has a weapon and starts beating your dog, the dog will run away. This is also true even for fight driven dogs, but it is far more likely for rank driven dogs. Also the rank driven dogs are harder to train and you need to have a lot of experience. If you want a guard dog, I recommend a bandog, fila brasileiro, or a working dogue de bourdeaux. These dogs are not rank driven and are also extremely protective. However, I recommend getting your dogs personal protection training because no matter what the breed, if the dog isn't trained and taught, the dog will still bail when the going gets rough, though the three breeds I listed are not as likely to hall ass on you.

btw, if you are really interested in the presa canario, I can give you the website of the breeder that my friend got his dog from. I went with him there personally when he picked out his pup and I also had a chance to interact with them. They are really good dogs and I'd recommend them for any mastiff lover that wants a smaller mastiff.
