I'd suggest saying he abandoned the dog for 3 months.. and fight for it (if he has warrants, he wont want the cops involved.. not to mention id doubt theyd believe he was providing and visiting the dog), but then hed just get another one and could/would cause problems with the family.. in our state - who has possession - owns the dog.. unless a report was made of theft (then you'd have to prove they came into your home to steal the dog), but the problems it will cause on the family, not to mention how *mean* will he make his next dog to piss you off.. could be far worse than this.. you know him better than I do, but you just have to do what you feel is right!
