And rum, wine*, port, etc - lots of things.
"Mother's ruin" refers to the affects of wholescale consumption of gin (Gordon's preferably ) in London, when much of the water was supplied by unhealthy artesian wells, which was why I used that in my comment.

*used in biblical times - around 1/5th (IIRC) wine and 4/5ths water to kill the germs. The references to "strong wine" were referring to pure wine, without water.
