And rum, wine*, port, etc - lots of things.
"Mother's ruin" refers to the affects of wholescale consumption of gin (Gordon's preferably ) in London, when much of the water was supplied by unhealthy artesian wells, which was why I used that in my comment.

*used in biblical times - around 1/5th (IIRC) wine and 4/5ths water to kill the germs. The references to "strong wine" were referring to pure wine, without water.
But they weren't drinking gin because of the impurity of the water, as was the case with beer. Beer was basically a water substitute. They even gave it to kids.
