you should never have to set aside your friends. especially if they only get to see each other once a year.

true, but life is making compromises... sometimes it is better to skip something.. it'll be back in the end..

If friends cannot understand his choice then what good are his friends?

If he goes, it wont be the same as previous years anyway. The feelings will be different.
