m8, what you do in the end is up to you,
If someone is actually threatening your or yours life, well then, he made his choice as you said, but honestly, splattering someones brain against the wall for breaking and entering, trying to steal your sh!t isnīt the best of ideas.
Putting another Person out of commission doesnīt need deadly force and accuracy.
(Unload a few rounds into someones legs/knees for an instance)
I can see where you're coming from, but you are absolutely wrong on every level. Let me explain.

Moral: Disabling someone for life is just as bad, if not worse, then shooting them. You may be causing more suffering this way.

Legal: If you aimed at his legs, means you were not afraid for your life. Which makes it assault with a deadly weapon, not self-defense.

Realistic: When you pull a gun, your opponent will not stand there, looking like a target, waiting for you to carefully aim at his legs. If you can shoot someone who is running at you in the legs accurately, you must be better than any trained force on the face of the Earth, because none of them even consider aiming at such a small moving target, being a shot they could realistically make.

Medical: Bullets are lethal. Only in Hollywood movies do people shrug off multiple gunshot wounds. It's stupidly easy to kill someone with a shot to the leg. A severed femoral artery is death in about 2 minutes. A severed popliteal artery is death in 5. Either way, LONG before any medical help could be offered. In the famous Hollywood bank shootout, the robbers were wearing multiple layers of body armor, and ultimately one of them died from being shot in the legs.

Like I said, I can see why you think the way you do... and it's noble in some way. But it's just wrong.
