York sounds like a good idea indeed... Seems like a nice place to visit and is pretty much "in the middle" of everything (I've been browsing the web a bit and there seems to be quite a lot of interesting sights both east and west of it. Might just be the best place to stay at!
Well a slightly different recommendation - I'd recommend West Yorkshire (my wife is from there), slightly more rugged mountains. Leeds is a good launch point, Bradford has been revitalised, lots of industrial revolution history there, Halifax further west has some nice towns and villages around it (Hebden Bridge for example is a good starting point for the Pennine Way).

York is a nice City, but it's a long drive up and then I think you're kinda stuck there.
