I'm British - the last time I travelled to the US to visit my brother who lives there, we went to a gun range with his father-in-law, who is American.

Basically all we had to do is sign some forms (waivers), and that was it, we were allowed to shoot. We were asked if we had any experience shooting before, and if we wanted supervision on the range. I have previously military experience, so was fine, - and my brothers father-in-law is an ex-cop, so acted as tutor for my father and brother.

As far as I understood, the fact that we attended the range with a US citizen as part of our group was incidental. We could have shot had we gone by ourselves, provided we signed the paperwork first.

This was in Seattle, Washington State.
