I never learned from a teacher either.

I think the trick for me is to learn songs that you really like, and really want to play. Then there will be lots of motivation to keep trying/practicing, and practice is the key.

Begin by picking a simple song, then download the tabs for it and learn them one small section at a time, making sure you got the previous section down before moving on. Start off slow and steady, and don't try to do more than you are able to.

This might not be the best way, but its how I started playing, and it worked for me.

Oh and make sure you get the basics right like left and right hand position, and how to hold a pick. There are plenty of instructional material on the web. You don't want to get into any bad habbits right from the start!
