for me I got them pulled because the orthodontist (going to fit braces, bent teef) said I had too many, so out 4 went. This was back in 1995 though

My jaw was "too small" for all of my teeth so my orthodontist went about expanding my jaw with a jaw expander. Worked well as far as I can tell. Had that and braces done 1997-2000. Took about a year more than if I went straight to braces, but I was able to have all of my teeth except for the wisdom teeth I had out. Now granted, my parents didn't wait until I was in highschool to get this done, so this was pretty much all done to my baby teeth. I don't know how easy it would be to expand an adult jaw, but it worked for me.
Oh, and as far as bent teeth, you should have seen some of mine! I actually had one that was at almost 90 degrees compared to the others! [rofl]
