I use Sony's ICD-U60; it's not the greatest you can buy and you can't add more memory in (but it comes with 512MiB as standard). It's also a little fiddly when it comes to searching through stored recordings - however, it's very compact, lightweight, and sensitive with a good signal-to-noise ratio. If any of Sony's more recent models are as good in that department, I'd be quite happy to spend the money on a new one.
