How much is an iphone in the USA before you sign up for a contract etc?

$599 for 8 gigs or $499 for 4

Having a contract or not makes NO difference to the price. But if you don't activate the phone, it does nothing. Nada. Nowt. Not a sausage. It just sits there, blank.
