It has been sporterize with gunsmith work, barrel has been tapped for scope mounts and a black synthetic stock. The scope is crap, a cheap simmons. I am looking for a wood stock for it.

Hmmmm. You might want to see if Boyds or Fajen make one for that rifle (they make nice wood stocks for Mausers, not sure about M96 though). You could always have a custom made one, which would also be nice if you intended to keep the gun (would make it more personal to you)....
