improve the ride? dude wtf are you smoking 14" wheels will have like say 185 70 r14tires
if you went to 17" you'll have like 195 35 r17. you loose 3 inches of rubber, you basicaly riding on pure medal no rubber, the more rubber you have the better the ride is. a 17" wheel will be heavier then a 14" wheel and makes the car harder to brake and you dont get as good acceleration.
I was worried about this, basicly as far as I can tell from research if the engine is above a certain size/power then the difference between smaller and bigger wheels up to a point is negligable, aslong as the circumpherence(sp) is the same/similar.

My first car (Punto 1.2 8V) had 17's, the ride was fine, it was lowered too, albeit with crap springs, so it was a bit bad with big bumps but otherwise the ride was fine and it handled brilliant. It never made it harder to brake, it did slow it down a tad, but that's because it was a 1.2 8v lol

From my days in the FFOC forum it seems 17's are the way to go for handling and 18's for looks, apparently 18's are a little bit harsh over bumps but tbh it won't bother me, it's a zetec and the ride is stiff anyway. It's a 1.8 too so they wont affect performance much if atall.

They look sexy too dont they
