I would suggest your choice is between the Nikon D40 or the Canon EOS 400D.
Remember that when buying a DSLR you are not just buying a camera body, you are buying into a particular lens systems - in the case either Canon, or Nikon.
I went the Canon route mainly because Canon high ISO performance is still much better than Nikon. That and the fact the Canon lens on offer are more suited to my style of shooting.
The Canon kit lens is actually not bad, despite what some people say. Its capable, if a little slow, and actually pretty sharp all things considered.
