The K10D blows away the Sony A100, Canon 400D, and D80 in terms of features. All of these cameras can give you great results, but at the ~$1000 price point, the K10D is the best bang for the buck. The D80 is a fantastic camera, but the in body SR is what (narrowly) sold me on the K10D over it. It's image quality is as good or better than all of the above, if you bother to set it up for 2 minutes - see djorgji's comment on the dpreview situation.

I had no loyalties or preferences when I started my research ~4 months ago. I like the lense system a little better with Canon or Nikon, but the high cost of their stabilized lenses kills it for me.

But anyways, the D40 is a great starter DSLR, there's no question.
