It's certainly not the blow out that people were hoping for but I think it looks good.
The PenTile display is a bit of a bummer and so is the camera, but I'm glad that Samsung kept the user-replaceable battery and I'm really glad that they kept the MicroSD card. Performance looks solid and I have no objections to regional variants using A15 dual cores vs. A9 quads. The A15 is a monster and LTE is pretty much a necessity for a "next" phone these days, IMO, so it's no compromise. If anything, a quad core without LTE is the compromise.
While some folks have complained, I like the appearance of the device. Obviously there's only so much you can do with regards to the appearance if you want a user-replaceable battery. I think Samsung made some good choices from the consumer's perspective here. I think it might have been nice to keep the textured back, though.
In particular, I'm very impressed by the screen-to-bezel ratio. It comes in stark, beautiful contrast to a device like the Lumia 900, whose corners make it look like it must have been designed in Bezel City.
The physical button is a bit of a head-scratcher, IMO. I don't like it on my SII. In general, though, I still like buttons on the device and if keeping them gives you more space on the screen that would otherwise be used by soft buttons, I'm all for it.
Moreso than anything, I think that the approach Samsung is taking here with regards to software is interesting. HTC went completely the other way by thinning Sense down and delivering a stunningly beautiful design (with a big mistake on the absent MicroSD slot). Samsung is beefing up its Android differentiation and sticking to simple, functional and powerful hardware.
I really like the idea of a window overlay and, assuming it works, I'd love to see more of that for other applications. One thing I often miss on my mobile devices is really real multitasking. Literally seeing and interacting with two different things at once. The instant call when you bring the phone to your ear while looking at a contact is really clever. I also like the eye-tracking business. Solves a common problem when reading content on your device. Additionally, 50GB on Dropbox? Yes please!
One thing I would have liked to see in TouchWiz is higher icon density on the homescreens and app drawer, though.
I think the whole content hub idea is stupid. Waste of time and money on Samsung's part. Don't fight Google on this - it's crazy. Embrace it instead.
