I know many people who wish to empathize with those addicted to substances, but find it so very frustrating because they are constantly disappointed by the user's actions (or lack thereof). Eventually the loved ones grow weary and give up trying to help them. If the substance user is not a loved one, people have even less tolerance, especially when they read about them robbing and stealing - sometimes injuring or killing their victim(s), or when they read about the alcoholic who wrecked and killed an innocent victim, like their own child.
