I was noting this when discussing interracial coupling on another forum.
This forum is an anomaly, because for the most part it's full of race obsessed people, but in general in my experience and that of my American friends, it doesn't seem to be a problem with your family if you date outside your race until well...something else goes wrong. For example, I've brought white men into my mother's home and into my grandmother's home to meet them. Of course my family's very polite and friendly naturally, but even when discussing it later, my mother or grandmother will never bring up the race issue... Unless...something else goes wrong. I've been in several relationships where there has been physical abuse and all of the sudden it seems my boyfriend's race becomes a central part of the discussion and repeatedly thrown back in my face, when it was entirely absent before and a total non-issue. Kind of how your neighbor of a different background is amiable with you, his/her background is not an issue...but if you have a falling out, all of the sudden they're that sand nigger or spic living next door to you. |
