Default Habesha names
hey guys, does anyone of you know the meaning of the name "Adiam"?

I've been told it means " a part of a kings land", but I doubt it's true.
It'll be nice if you could help, cause my sister is dying to know what her name means.

Thank you in advance

Adiam looks similar to the name Adam, which means "earth". Adiam could have a similar meaning, but I don't really know. Why don't you think it means "a part of a king's land"?

The word for man and earth is the same in Classical Hebrew, IIRC.

Don't know what the name means. I don't think it shares the same origin as "Adam", probably has to do with "Adi" (ዓዲ) somehow.

Lol_Raca and Habesha20, do you think it refers to Iyasu I. ? His throne name was Adyam Segad, according to wikipedia and other sources. But I do not know any males with that name, just females.

I read before God made Adam , Earth was called still "eretz" then it is only later "earth" became "Adama" on Wikipedia. héhé.

I am not sure what Adiam means, it could be a ge'ez biblical name , or maybe some form of tigrynia, the only person I have known with that name was a female Eritrean (quite a long time ago). If the Wikipedia translation of Iyasu I's throne name is correct then Adyam means 'the confines of the earth' because seged, means to bow or prostrate. I don't think that it would matter if it was used as part of a throne name for a male, as it is alluding to an object that is not gender specific , i.e. the confines of the earth.

Menelik sounds like Malik (Arabic), so I guess that one means King?

Is your sister's name just Adyam? I think Adyam means something like "humanity." I've always understood Adyam Seged to mean (this is the definition on Wikipedia): ""to whom the confines of the earth bow."

In that name, I guess it means the regions of earth where humans live. So you could say "Adyam" = all humanity, the whole earth, or something along those lines.

Menelik sounds like Malik (Arabic), so I guess that one means King?
Wtf, you know who Menelik is. It doesn't have a meaning AFAIK. Just the name of the legendary king.

No idea what Aboro means or what region it's from. Googling it brought up only Nigerians.

From what I understand Aboro is an Amharic name.

Af-werki, I thought it would have something to do with mouth since in the somali language "Af" also means mouth. for example,

Af-Weyne = big-mouth.
Af-yare = small mouth
Af-qarsha = bottle mouth = small mouth

A kid from my area of town back in Hargeysa, was called Keysa Kabada. I suppose kabada derived from Kabad. I suppose it is a pure coincidence but I always wondered if there was a connection as these names sound like cushitic.

Thanks .Yes, her name is "Adyam" but they spell it "Adiam" or "Adjam" in Germany

My parents are one of the few habesha parents, who didn't know the meaning of our names, they just found them beautiful...smh
