Oh jen* you're the greatest. I grew up around theater, since my parents were involved in community theater. (they actually met doing theater in college) I haven't been to NYC to see a "real" Broadway show yet (I hope so soon), but I've seen a lot of plays and musicals.
The shows I've seen are:

PLAYS
Barefoot in the Park
A Portrait of Jenny (this and Barefoot in the Park might not count, because my Dad directed Barefoot in the Park and my sister was in A Portrait of Jenny. It was her senior play.)
Agnes of God (a very well done performance from a community theater from Utica, NY)
Shear Madness (my parents are college friends with the guy who started it, Bruce Jordan. Very funny show.)

MUSICALS
Music Man (my sister was in the high school production, she played Mayor Shin's daughter, Zenita.)
Little Shop of Horrors
Into the Woods
The Who's Tommy
They're Playing Our Song

And on December 15th, my Mom and I are going to see
Mama Mia here in Buffalo. I can't wait. It cost me $139 for both tickets ($60 each + the Ticketmaster surcharge and taxes).

I'm also hoping to see The Full Monty and Riverdance, which I know isn't a "musical", but I want to see it too.

A few years ago, my sister and I took a theatre/museum trip to New York. Caught a showing of The Fantastics, which just closed recently after thirty-some years. I was also lucky enough to catch Sunset Boulevard and Mousetrap while in London. A few months ago, a local theatre group put on a fantastic showing of Steel Magnolias and Driving Miss Daisy.

Default Theater Arts
I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who like to discuss theater. (And because I'm going to the theater tonight)

My favorite type of theater is musical theater. I never really went to a real show until I met Greg. He was in theater in College and his big starring role was King Arthur in the Ole Miss production of Camelot. Occasionally he walks around the house singing, "Oh Why Can't a Woman be More Like a Man?"

We are going to be attending our local community theater's production of Sweeny Todd this evening. For those of you who don't know.....he's the Demon Barber of Fleet Street! Consequently, I'll be heading off to the mall to find a dress.

A short list of musical productions I have attended:

Jesus Christ, Superstar
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Chicago
Cabaret
Oliver
Damn Yankees

I still haven't seen Cats. And I'm dying to see Rent.

Thanks Shortie. I will make it a point.

For those of you who know Sweeny Todd the show was great. I had a wonderful time seeing this show live for the first time. The mic failed at the beginning of the second act and that threw the actors off for the remainder of the show, but that's what opening night is all about.

I will be volunteering with the theater on their next production, and, depending on what it is, I may even audition. I haven't acted in years.

Greg has volunteered to take over their website, so I'll let y'all know where to look when he gets it updated.

Sounds like a blast, Molly. I'd love to see Momma Mia. It's coming to Pittsburgh, but I'm not sure I'll be able to make it.

Psst. Your niece shares a birthday with my son.

This is a great thread Jen....

I LOVE the theatre.... I have seen several productions.. In fact my father was in community theatre himself..

I have seen

Wizard of Oz
Fiddler on the Roof
My Fair Lady
His Trubador

I wish I would be more active in theatre going.. It is an amazing Form of Art and if done correctly can be a wonderful experience.

Now, OPERA is a DIFERRENT STORY all together... Cant deal with anything that I cannot understand.. hahaha

Okay, well since my original post in this thread, I have seen CATS when I was in West Virginia, the touring production came to WVU and my friend gave me her tickets. Wow, what a production. Now I understand why people either love it or they hate it.
I haven't seen a stage production of Rent, but I have the DVD of the movie and I LOVE it. What a great production. The production is touring and in fact will be at WVU at the end of April, but now I'm in LA. GAWD I can hardly wait for The Saenger to reopen.

Movin' Out is coming to Pittsburgh's Benedum Center April 20-24. I wish I could go, but we already have plans for that weekend.

One of my most favorite shows is Crimes of the Heart. It's not a musical, but it's hilarious.

Oh, BTW, my local theatre group is doing Don't Drink the Water by Woody Allen.

The last one I went to see was Fiddler On The Roof. I actually enjoy musicals. I've never been into any other type of live theater. I'd really like to see My Fair Lady.
