Default Need Advice on Lenses for Rebel XT
I'm looking at some new lenses for my Rebel XT. I'm not looking for anything over the top; To emphasize this, when Dell had a sale, I bought a basic 75-300mm from Canon as seen below:

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...9&sku=A0670090

In addition to this, I have the basic 18-55mm that came with the camera.

I'm wondering what my next lens should be. I'm thinking a wide angle would be nice, but it seems that a lot of them are moving into the expensive range. I'm hoping to stay with Canon direct, but another manufacturer would be acceptable if it's a good lens.

Thoughts?

A price range will really help. [thumbup]

Unfortunately, with Canon (and most makers really), anything of quality will command a decent price. Especially in the extreme ranges; so with that said, what specifically are you looking for?

It is nice to say you want wider, but you as a photographer, need to look and see what shots you feel you are missing. Are you wanting to do large landscapes? Or how about group portraits? Or even nice panoramas? These are things that a good wide will do for you.

However, your kit 18-55 is already decently wide - to get wider will cost a decent penny. And again, give that you already have an 18, are you sure you really want wider?

With the two lenses you have, you already cover a decent focal range.

Anything wider than 18mm is a niche lens, and will likely only be used occasionally. I have the canon 10-22 lens, - its very much a specialist lens, not for everday use.

If you really want a new lens, then I would suggest getting a higher quality one, covering some of the focal ranges you already have (an upgrade basically).

Unless you are noticing quality issues with your photos though, I would say this is unnecessary.

Instead of lenses, have you considered other accessories?, - such as a cable-release - which is invaluable if you are doing long exposure shots.

The sigma 24-70 is a very good lens, especially at its price. Many people have said that it can compete with its canon counterpart on most levels (minus build quality and the like) except for focusing speed, which is where it really lags behind. As you're using it for a portrait lens, however, i'd say it's a great purchase. I'd say the 50mm is a must for low light shooting, but i find it a tad long for everyday use.

If you're on a budget and want a near L quality lens grab the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens.

I speak on experience as a previous user that is rarely let me down during weddings.

Canon 1DMark II (WHOOHOO! Just picked her up last Saturday, and I'm in LOVE!)
Canon 30D + BG-E2 Battery Grip
Canon 28-70mm f2.8 L
Canon 50mm f1.4
Canon 85mm f1.8
Canon 2 580EX & 1 430EX Flash Units
[Tokina 19-35mm f3.5-4.5
Canon 70-200mm f.2.8 L
Newton Custom Bracket
Kenesis Shooting Belt w/ attachments
Stands, Umbrellas, that kind of pro stuff

With this setup I have and will continue to tackle any invironment and situation and deal out great quality shots for my customers.

I know I've been gone, but it's for good reason! My second daughter was born on April the 3rd, 2007, and I have 17 weddings booked this year with 2 already booked for 2008!

Hope I helped!

Glad to hear that things are working out for you, Tim. These wedding will keep you busy for sure (i had one helluva time with just a single wedding last year, but seventeen!), and you definitely have the gear to get the job done, as well.

As for the OP, who seems to have vanished, I can only recommend again that Sigma, Tokina, and Tamron do offer very reasonably priced alternatives to Canon's lenses. They are usually optically very similar with the main differences coming in build quality and focus speed. Don't hesitate to look at those three brands if you find that Canon is letting you down with its options/prices.

Thanks, it's taken a lot of time, trial, error, and money to get everything, but I honestly have no DOUBTS in my equipment. Now it's just me... =o)
