from what i kno of the subject is adobe indesign cs 2 the best program for converting images to vector graphic using its automated feature?

The live trace feature in Illustrator works well, but it really depends on your source image. Of course you can use Photoshop to tweak the image before using live trace to get better results.

If it's line art then it will do a great job, it obviously stuggles more on photos. If you are trying to do vector art of people (or of any kind really) you will get far better results if you create them yourself.

iirc Flash also has a similar feature like that.. cant remember the name of the function though

Modify > Bitmap > Trace Bitmap

and it doesn't work too well.

I've never tried an automated vectorization. To be honest, I don't think I was aware the feature existed before seeing this thread. But I've let Photoshop create paths from selections, and it rounds off edges I would have rather seen sharp, and adds lots of points where they aren't necessary, which can bloat files easily. I much prefer to do it by hand if I have the time, but I'm always forced to make adjustments if I let the program create the path for me.

I think flash handles this better than anything else. To be honest. It's more of a bonus than a real feature of flash though.

Quite handy as you can save from flash to illustrator/freehand.
