Default DOF calculator
Here is a useful link for anyone with a camera capable of F.stop adjustments.

Basically, you enter your camera, focal length, distance from subject, and it tells you how big the acceptable DOF (depth of field will be).

Example - 50mm at F1.8, with the subject 1m away the total DOF is only 3cm [shocked]

Taking a standard example when shooting with the 70-200F4/L for example - having that lens at F5, focal length of 200mm, and your subject, say 8m from you, the DOF is actually still only 30cm.

i wonder if the same thing is applicable to 3dsMAX (IIRC you have to setup and position a 'camera' and then set the focal point, small test render froma while ago:

Only rendering engine that I know of that allows you to set f-stop is Maxwell Render.

very nice :-)

It is really nice to see that my 28-105mm lense at 105mm with F4.5 (widest at that setting) at closest focal distance of 25cm gives me under 0.5cm DOF.

really nice calculator

Sweet, and since it's a webpage I can use it "in the field" from my cellphone.
