Default Haga school of Kendo
Does anyone know much about Haga Sensei of the Haga school of Kendo. I know that it is pre-war(?) kendo and I was wondering, from a regular kendo practitioner what exactly this might mean as far as technique and training differences.

I just tried to research it, but with such little info, I couldn't find what I wanted. Do you have his full name? I never have heard of Haga-sensei before. By school of kendo, do you mean a dojo by that name or, just his style?

Thanks. Now you got me interested.

The only Haga sensei I have heard much about is Tadatoshi Haga sensei who is (was?) hachidan hanshi in both iaido and kendo. I'm not sure he is still alive or not.

I beleive he was at Shidogakuin NY dojo in 2004 for their 20th anniv. taikai as shinpan-cho. Any shidogakuin members know?

Spoke with Shioiri-sensei a couple of months ago, and asked about Haga-sensei (Tadatoshi Haga). Reply was that he passed away a couple of years ago. Maybe we each had a different person in mind?

Well I'm not necessarily surprised if Tadatoshi Haga sensei had passed, he would be like 88 or so now if he was still alive I think. I hadn't heard that he had passed though.

You're too funny! That had me laughing.

Judging by the pre-war comment, I knew the sensei must be legit. Anything pre-war is interesting.

Oh gee, THANKS. They are in Japanese... Too much kanji and not enough hiragana in it to make any sense at all as to what it says. *sniff!* Waaaaahhhh, I can't READ it!!!

Don't you have any information in English? Where are those pics on the second site please?

Hanshi Tadatoshi Haga was not well enough to make the trip for the tournament.

Hi all, might want to tone this premature news down a bit.

Tadatoshi Haga is a great friend and supporter of Australian Kendo and Iaido, and if he had died, I am sure that we would have heard.

Just thought I'd point out that the links George posted are about Haga Jun'ichi, not Haga Tadatoshi.

Somehow I think there is confusion over who is who here.

(EDIT: Oroshi got in here first!)

The original Haga (Junnichi) sensei - and the one the original question is pertaining too I believe - died in 1966 at age 58 and was a student of Nakayama Hakudo. His students currently run the Haga Dojo(s) following his teachings in kendo/iaido as close as possible.

Kendo Jidai has is currently in the middle of a year-long series about Haga senseis kendo.

Disclaimer: I know very little about the Haga dojo nor its comings and goings. I think there are a couple of 8dan brothers called Haga, but I have no idea if they are anything to do with Haga Junnichi or not. KingofM has sometimes posted about Haga here in the past.

Here is some information about "Haga Tadatoshi" in English and Japanese (content is different) from the Yoshinkan dojo in Canada. It seems Tadatoshi was a student of Junnichi.

The Japanese page of the Canadian site says it all: "羽賀忠利: 世に鬼才と言われた羽賀準一の実弟"

They're brothers.
I know of 8th dans who today look to Haga Tadatoshi as an exemplar in kendo and iaido, despite his health.

Also his brother (mentioned above) was a highly respected and much feared kendo opponent.
